One of the things causing quite a stir around Virginia Tech, especially the Christian community here, is the protest that Westboro Baptist Church and Fred Phelps will be holding here tomorrow. They will be proclaiming their message of "God Hates Fags" and telling our community that the April 16 shootings were sent by God as an angry response to the sins of our town, especially the fact that we tolerate "fornication, adultery, and sodomy." I mourn that these people claim to represent Jesus in their actions, but I am comforted that most people, even those opposed to the Christian faith, sense that what WBC proclaims is a distortion of who God is.
BCM has our Spring Retreat this weekend, so most of us will be on our way out of town as these protests are going on. We have encouraged our students to live out the call of God we talked about in one of our 6:33 worship services this semester: "Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all." (Romans 12:17)
I wanted to share a post from our pastor's blog where he addresses this issue and shares his thoughts on how we should respond to the protesters - he says it way better than I ever could!
